Managing Your Mental Health during the Corona Virus Pandemic

These are unprecedented times we are living in which are effecting us individually and as a society. We are all experiencing some sort of loss and grief and living in the unknowns of the future with a limited ability to make plans. We don’t really know what tomorrow brings. So what can we do? What can we control right now when it feels like everything is out of control? We wanted to provide some simple tips for managing your mental health during the corona virus pandemic. We hope this list might help you find some semblance of control and order in your life during these chaotic days.

Tip #1:

Stick to normal routines in your day.

  • Wake up and go to sleep at the same time everyday.
  • Get dressed, fix your hair, brush your teeth even if you aren’t leaving the house.

Tip #2:

Maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise.

  • Cook or have healthy meals delivered
  • try new recipes
    • Look up fun cooking videos and do as a family
  • Get up and move regularly throughout your day
    • go for a walk
    • engage in online workout classes
    • have a dance party 

Tip #3:

Get outside every day.

  • Go for a walk around your block
  • Sit on your porch and enjoy the spring weather
  • Observe nature, the birds and squirrels and bugs
  • Play with your pets

Tip #4:

Find small ways to treat yourself.

  •  Pick up your favorite coffee to-go
  • Buy a new pair of running shoes to encourage you to get moving
  • Give yourself a mani/pedi
  • Make a special meal
  • Take a nap

Tip #5:

Limit your media intake.

  • Set a time limit on how much news or social media you engage in, when big things change, you’ll know.
  • Only get news from trusted news outlets
  • Turn it off and walk away when you notice your body shift from relaxed to tense

Tip #6:

Use technology to help you connect with loved ones

  • Social distancing does not equal social isolation! Use the technology you have at your disposal to reach out and connect with your friends and family
